John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892. He was a major scholar of the English language regarding Old and Middle English. Tolkien was the professor of Anglo-Saxon (Old English) at the University of Oxford, and he also wrote stories, including â€Å"The Hobbit† (1937) and The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955); the setting is in a prehistorical time in his inventive world called by the Middle English name of Middle-earth (Doughan). This was lived by Men and Women, Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, Orcs and Hobbits. He has been condemned by the Eng. Lit. establishment, but loved by the vast masses (Doughan).
